2016 Momtazi Vineyard "Tir"


2016 is the second year of my “Tir” bottling. It is made exclusively from one acre of a field blend planting surrounded by Oregon oaks and a few native madrones from above, and so far, has been very distinct from my other blocks at Momtazi Vineyard. Once again, it is 100% whole cluster. Visually, the “Tir” is beautiful, transparent, light-filled, medium deep red with youthful hues of purple, blue and magenta in its facets. The nose is full of exotic spices and red and blue fruits. It is spellbinding and beautiful (because of the place-not because of me). The mouth is very much in line with the nose and very smooth on the palate, but the structure is always there. The minerals and exotic spices and fruits spiral the palate and finish long, but this beloved (by me), shimmering wine is as elusive as the wind or the night.

The Tir bottling from the Momtazi Vineyard is a small parcel in the larger vineyard that was planted on selection massale, rather than the Dijon clones used in the rest of the vineyard, and Kelley first started bottling these vines on their own in the 2015 vintage. The 2016 version of Tir is a lovely young bottle, offering up a pure, sappy and quite black fruity nose of black raspberries, dark berries, woodsmoke, dark soil tones, a touch of black tea, lovely herb tones (mostly lavender and thyme) and a touch of dried eucalyptus in the upper register.  On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and a bit more structurally suave than the regular bottling of Momtazi this year, with a sappy core of black fruit, lovely focus and balance, fine-grained tannins and a long, nascently complex and classy finish.  This is an excellent bottle in the making.  2025-2060+  93+.
