2016 Maresh Vineyard Star of Bethlehem Flower Block

Lightish-medium blue-red in colour, the Star is so enchanting (to me) visually that I burned about a half an hour looking up the names of cool-toned oil paint reds, like Alizarin crimson, Winsor red, and carmine. “Blue-red with flashes of youthful purple and magenta” didn’t seem adequate. I ran out of time, so here it is. 2016 is the second year of production for this beloved block that is also home to the beautiful, heart-healing Star of Bethlehem flowers. It is farmed by Jim Maresh Senior. Only four barrels went into this bottling, and as in 2015, it is 100% whole cluster from 100% self-rooted Pommard vines planted in 1991. As of this writing (late January 2018), the Star’s nose is very focused, spicy, and disarmingly pure in its expression of the small, sun-ripened Hood strawberries typical of my Maresh bottlings. There is tension here, and this wine will cellar for some time. It is in higher relief and less dense in the mouth than the more fluid Red Barn Blocks, but still has the luxurious silk of Maresh. If this were a bird, it would be a soaring raptor, perhaps a red-tailed hawk, like the one that lives in the woods next to the Old Block. The Hood strawberries and spice continue in the mouth along with a tiny hint of saline like the ocean air, and with soft minerals. This Star is not so much a flowing wine like the Red Barn Blocks as a wine whose movement is radiance, and it stays long on the palate.
